The Best Sofa Removal Solutions

September 13, 2017.

Has the excitement of purchasing new furniture been dulled by the difficulty of unloading your old stuff? Finding a new home for old furniture can be a challenge under most circumstances, but upholstered goods can be particularly difficult to manage. While it may be tempting to toss your old couch on the curb in hopes someone will take it, this is neither an ethical or responsible means of disposal. There are, however, more conscientious options.

Weighing Your Sofa Removal Options

When determining any course of action, it’s always wise to weigh the pros and cons of each option. Getting rid of an old couch, or even a full set of living room furniture, is no exception.

  • Sales—You can attempt to sell your old upholstered furniture, either through furniture consignment specialists or simple classified ads. The truth of the matter is that you will almost certainly not recover anything near the purchase price of the furniture. Even if it looks like new, used sofas or sofa sets do not retain resale value. Throw in a few stains, snags and any kind of smell, and your chances of earning money further plummet.
  • Donation—Giving up your belongings for a good cause is an honorable deed, no matter how you slice it. When it comes to upholstered furniture, however, you may be surprised at how little your charitable nature is appreciated. Many donation and charity centers do not accept these items at all due to the risk of bedbug infestation. If you do manage to find an organization willing to accept your sofa, be aware that they will likely not offer pickup services. In order to give your furniture away, you’ll have to take charge of the transportation.
  • Disposal—Renting a dumpster or hauling your old sofa off to the landfill may seem like your only option, especially if you have no luck with selling or donating it to a local charity. The environmental impact of dumping your furniture is substantial, though, and may be avoidable. Another drawback to this plan: you’ll still have to do all the hauling.

Disposal Alternatives for Upholstered Furniture

When you’ve tried everything and still have an old sofa preventing you from bringing home your new furniture, there is another option. Professional hauling and sofa removal is usually the ideal solution. You don’t have to wear yourself out or run the risk of injury; you don’t have to make arrangements for transportation; and you don’t have to make a trip all the way out to a landfill.
