Some projects allow you to work at your leisure, with no worries about deadlines or timetables; others aren’t quite so flexible. Whether you’re working to purge items you don’t want to carry with you before a big move, scrambling to prepare space for a new family member or doing the heartbreaking work of closing a loved one’s estate, some things simply cannot wait. When time is truly of the essence, you don’t have time to worry about municipal bulk collection schedules all day. Junk removal and disposal can be the most pressing part of almost any large-scale cleaning project, but managing it doesn’t have to be a stressful experience.
Knowing all your disposal options can help you make decisions best suited to the unique needs of your individual project. For Austinites, there’s plenty to consider and a lot you should know before you ever begin the work of cleaning and organizing.
Does the City of Austin Offer All Day Junk Removal?
With a Zero Waste by 2040 goal and a focus on mitigating landfill impact, the City of Austin takes a different approach to bulk disposal. Unlike municipalities offering monthly or even on-demand bulk collection, Austin Resource Recovery provides bulk pickup to residential customers twice per year on a schedule of their choosing. Different areas of the city are serviced on different weeks, as well, making it a bit difficult to know when you’ll have access to these services.
When you’re in the middle of a time-sensitive project, you simply can’t wait for one of the two weeks per calendar year when Austin Resource Recovery collects bulk waste. Even if you’re fortunate enough to find that your schedule aligns with that of the city, there are still some things you’ll want to consider before settling on municipal collection as your waste management solution.
First and foremost, there are a number of stringent guidelines and restrictions governing bulk collection in Austin. In order to avoid your castoff items being left at the curb or even the prospect of fines, it’s important to be aware of these rules and to adhere to them.
Items placed out for collection must be separated into three distinctly separate piles: passenger vehicle tires removed from their rims, metal items (including appliances) and non-metal items. Tires and metal items are transported to recycling facilities, but items in the latter category will be taken to the nearest landfill. This includes items which are still in usable condition, like furniture and household goods.
The three piles must be at the curb no later than 6:30 am on the first day of your scheduled collection week and in accordance with all placement guidelines. All piles must be at least five feet from parked vehicles, fences, walls, utility meters and connection boxes, trash carts and other objects. Because bulk collection week is intended exclusively for items too large to be containerized, it’s also important to ensure nothing is placed out in bags, boxes or bins. Any bagged waste will be considered extra trash, and as such, subject to extra trash fees.
This means you must be physically capable of dragging even the heaviest items down to the curb, being sure to place them according to ARR guidelines. You must also be willing to accept the idea that your cleaning project will have a significant landfill impact, and that usable items will not be salvaged for donation. You must also be willing to invest a significant amount of time and energy into ensuring proper placement. Mistakes can mean penalties or the prospect of finding yourself with waste left at the curb when bulk collection week ends.

If you’re working on a project large enough to generate significant amounts of waste, there’s a good chance you’ve got a long to-do list packed with equally pressing responsibilities. You don’t have time to spend days or weeks working to ensure your waste is acceptable by Austin Resource Recovery’s standards. This especially holds true when you stop to consider how far bulk collection sets the city back from long-term Zero Waste goals.
