When it comes to getting rid of unwanted items, few things are as difficult to manage as appliances. In addition to the environmental hazards discarded appliances can pose, they also tend to be large and ungainly. This means that not only do you have to research all the pertinent laws and guidelines but also to arrange transportation.
From the oldest refrigerator to the smallest garbage disposal, NYC has laws and regulations in place determining how you can dispose of unwanted appliances. The Environmental Protection Agency and other federal guidelines also apply, making compliance with the law almost as laborious as uninstalling and moving a household appliance.
Appliance Garbage Disposal: NYC Options and Solutions
It’s never easy to find a new home for an old appliance, but it can be particularly challenging in a densely populated city.
If you have access to a vehicle of suitable size, hauling appliances away on your own can seem like the most efficient and cost-effective option at first glance. It pays to take a closer look, though, because there are hidden costs and potential risks which complicate DIY removal.
Refrigerators alone come with a host of rules, laws, regulations and guidelines regarding disposal. If a refrigerator was manufactured before 2010, there’s a good chance it contains an environmentally-hazardous coolant which has since been marked for phaseout by the EPA. This means you’ll need to either take it to the appropriate recycling center yourself or work closely with knowledgeable professionals to stay on the right side of federal law. Local laws may require you to remove locks and hinges, or doors altogether, as a safety precaution.
Newer refrigerators aren’t necessarily less difficult, either. The newer, less hazardous coolant is highly flammable, which means some pickup services and recycling centers won’t accept them at all. If there’s a flammable warning sticker on the unit, you won’t be able to take advantage of free DSNY garbage disposal. NYC sanitation won’t accept them at all, instead suggesting you contact the refrigerator manufacturer for recycling.
DSNY does offer bulk pickup for everything from mattresses to appliances, but you’ll have to make an appointment for potentially hazardous items like an aging refrigerator. Appointments may need to be scheduled weeks in advance, though, making it a tough hurdle to clear if you’re on a tight deadline.
