Is Bulk Garbage Pickup Your Best Option?

December 27, 2017.

Worn-out furniture, inoperable appliances and years of accumulated belongings for which you no longer have a use. Whether you’re cleaning out an estate after the loss of a loved one, purging your home of clutter, or trying to get a rental back in shape for the market, bulky items to dispose of are always a challenge.

With so many different requirements for disposal and multiple options for meeting those requirements, simply choosing a method of removing unwanted items can be overwhelming. When you’re facing a big cleanup project, time is of the essence. You can easily invest so much time in trying to make a decision that you find yourself scrambling to implement a plan in the face of a looming deadline.

Methods for Managing Large Amounts of Waste

While there are more companies offering hauling solutions than you can count, the number of actual disposal options is relatively small.

You can haul your own waste, but this will require access to a truck of some sort and likely some assistance from friends or family. If you do have vehicle access, it will likely be a full-size pickup truck at best. This will mean multiple trips to several locations since you probably won’t be able to fit everything into one load and different items will need to end up in different places.

Donation centers may accept your unwanted furniture, for instance, but they probably won’t accept recycling waste or offer pickup services. This means you’ll need to haul each load of furniture to the donation center, in addition to all the trips you’ll need to make to recycling centers and landfills. To further complicate logistics, recyclable materials may need to be separated by type for different recycling facilities. Those which process plastic and paper, for example, will not accept electronics or appliances.

If you don’t have access to a truck, you can attempt to schedule through various municipal programs for bulk garbage pickup. Many of these programs limit the number of specific kinds of items you can have hauled away in a year, however, so you may find yourself in a bind if you’re trying to clear an entire house. You’ll also find yourself at the mercy of bureaucratic scheduling whims, which can affect your ability to stay on schedule.
