When you look at your old mattress, you see nights of peaceful rest. The New York City government, however, doesn’t see such a rosy picture. To everyone else, a discarded mattress is a bedbug infestation waiting to happen. For this reason, there are rules and regulations in place for how and where you must dispose of unwanted bedding.
The Costs of Free Mattress Removal: NYC Sanitation Guidelines
Trying to get rid of your own discarded mattress is enough of a challenge; what do you do when you’re a property owner trying to deal with abandoned furniture in one of your rental units? From simple residential disposal to REO and rental cleanouts, it’s often difficult to navigate the complicated red tape of mattress removal, NYC.
NYC sanitation will pick up most mattresses and box springs, but you’ll need to make sure you’re adhering to all those rules.
Mattresses smaller than 4’x3′ can be placed at the curb for regular pickup, no special appointments required. Anything larger and you’ll need to make an appointment up to four weeks in advance.
All mattresses, box springs and futons must be sealed in specialty bags available through many retailers throughout the city. DSNY does not provide these bags, and they will not take any unsealed mattresses. In fact, you can expect a $100 fine for leaving it on the curb unbagged. At the end of the day, you still have to muster the strength to remove your mattress, bag it and haul it all the way down to the curb after paying for bagging materials. If you’re dealing with more than one set of bedding or large mattresses on a strict schedule, you’ll also need to factor in the time cost associated with delayed appointments.
If you’re trying to get rid of a mattress before you move, for example, you could find yourself on the hook for extra rent if you’re not able to clear the unit due to delays in scheduling. For investors or landlords, lost rent is lost money. Either way, those “free” services can become quite pricey. Thinking about hauling a mattress away yourself? Not so fast; even if you have access to a truck capable of hauling large pieces of bedding, most drop-off locations will not accept mattresses.
