NYC Sanitation Pickup Schedule for Large Items

NYC Sanitation Pickup Schedule for Large Items

You know when DSNY removes typical household waste, but what’s the NYC sanitation pickup schedule for big items? If you’re trying to find the right time to get rid of old furniture, appliances, electronics or construction waste, it helps to have a clear understanding of DSNY’s bulk pickup policy.

Bulky NYC Sanitation Pickup: Schedule Your Own Appointment

Unlike regular pickup, there’s no set day for bulk collection. Depending on what kind of items you need to have removed, you’ll need to make an appointment with DSNY well in advance. You’ll also need to make sure you’re aware of all the rules and regulations set forth by the program, along with any applicable state, local and federal laws.

For instance, any mattress must be placed inside specialty mattress bags designed to prevent the spread of bedbugs before it’s set out for collection. These bags are not provided by DSNY, so you’ll need to purchase them yourself and make sure they’re properly applied to avoid fines and citations. Any mattress over 4 feet by 3 feet will require an appointment, which may need to be made days or even weeks in advance.

Refrigerators manufactured before 2010 will also require special treatment due to the environmentally hazardous coolant they likely contain. This coolant is in the process of being phased out by the EPA, so you’ll need to make an appointment for coolant removal after removing any locking devices and hinges. If you’re disposing of a newer model, you might think you’re in the clear. After all, the new coolant is safer, right?

Not so fast. Newer appliances containing coolant, like refrigerators, freezers and air conditioners, bear a flammability warning. These can’t be picked up by DSNY at all, leaving you to either contact the manufacturer or seek out private handling. Check these services from Jiffy Junk.

Should You Hire Private Waste Management?

Any non-recyclable items smaller than 4 feet by 3 feet can be placed out for collection the night before regular pickup. Rigid plastics, metal and other recyclables can be placed outside the evening before recycling pickup, assuming they’re smaller than the 4’x3′ limit. Since no waste can protrude into the street, in front of another property, or impede pedestrian traffic, this isn’t the most efficient option if you’re working on a moderate-to-large-scale cleaning project.

If you’re doing the kind of work that generates bulk waste, it means you’re busy enough already. You don’t have time to research the ins and outs of disposal laws, regulations and rules. Our Jiffy Junk technicians have done all that work for you, so all you have to do is make a single call. We’ll come to your home or business anywhere in the five boroughs, Nassau County or Suffolk County to provide true white-glove service.
