Sometimes, you need to get rid of something bulky but simple, like an old sofa or a worn-out mattress. Other times, you’re looking for large item disposal solutions a bit less ordinary. Find out how you can get rid of even your most unusual bulky items in Broward County, no questions asked.
How Does Large Item Disposal Work in Broward County?
Municipal waste management guidelines for Broward County residents do include allowances for large item disposal, but there are restrictions you should keep in mind before you start counting on regular pickup. First and foremost, bulk collection happens once each month in Broward County, so you’ll want to make sure the pickup day works for your schedule if you’re facing a deadline.
Items must be placed curbside before 7AM on collection day, which also means you’ll be responsible for doing all the heavy lifting from your house to the street. The following items are acceptable for bulk collection through Broward County Solid Waste and Recycling Services:
- Sofas and chairs
- Carpets and padding (rolled and tied securely)
- Fencing (also rolled and tied securely)
- Lawn waste (tree trimmings, palm fronds, logs, metal poles and tree branches)
Tree trunks and logs must be stacked neatly, while trimmings, branches and palm fronds should be arranged in as orderly a manner as possible at the curb. Large items should not be placed out more than 24 hours before scheduled collection and must not be placed near a utility pole, cable box, fire hydrant, mailbox, fence or any vehicles. If your bulk collection pile is a large and varied one, it’s also important to note that items Broward County Solid Waste and Recycling Services won’t accept will not be moved in order to gain access to acceptable items. This means items they normally accept, like furniture and appliances, will be left behind if there’s an item they don’t accept blocking access. Items not accepted include, but are not limited to:
- Chemical and hazardous waste, oil, paint products or insecticides
- Construction, demolition and remodeling debris, including bricks, broken concrete and brickwork
- Excessive organic material resulting from development or land clearing
- Auto parts, automotive bodies, batteries, transmissions, mounted automobile tires, engines, large truck tires and all marine parts
- Any debris resulting from commercial operations, including professional landscaping or lawn care
If the items you need to get rid of are on the previous list, then it’s just a matter of ensuring your schedule aligns with the single monthly bulk collection day, and that you’re able to lug those heavy items down to the curb in time. Of course, you’ll also have to be sure your conscience can bear sending those unwanted items to the landfill, because with a few exceptions, this is where most bulk waste is destined to land.
When you’re dealing with less common items or you can’t justify the path of least resistance headed straight for the nearest landfill, are there any alternatives? Find out what you can do about large item disposal when municipal bulk pickup services don’t fit the bill.
