There are times when the twice-weekly pickup through Solid Waste Authority of Palm Beach County just won’t cut it, and oversized trash pickup is needed. What kind of things qualify as bulk or oversized items, and how do you handle them?
Knowing when you can work within the constraints of municipal residential waste and when you can’t is an important part of any project likely to yield a large amount of oversized waste, but it’s particularly vital when you’re working on a deadline. Even with twice-weekly pickup, delays can easily happen if you accidentally fail to comply with guidelines regarding containers, preparation and waste type. Find out how to deal with appliances, furniture, large household items and other oversized waste.
How Palm Beach County SWA Handles Oversized Trash Pickup
In order to choose the best disposal methods for your project, you’ll need to first know what SWA will and will not consider acceptable when it comes to oversized trash pickup. There is a robust system in place for the collection of household waste and bulk items, but there are a number of regulations and limitations that can make municipal waste management a less than ideal solution for some clients.
Twice each week, large household goods can be left out for collection. This includes appliances, furniture, toilets, bathtubs and similar items which will not fit into a standard waste can. These items can be left at the curb alongside garbage cans on pickup days, no special appointments necessary.
Doors on any appliances, including refrigerators, freezers, washers and dryers, must be either removed or securely sealed to prevent children from becoming trapped inside. If you’re getting rid of glass, it must be broken up into manageable pieces and fully containerized in a solid container that weighs less than fifty pounds, but other construction debris and similar rubble can be a bit more complicated to manage.
Construction debris from minor repairs can be set out on each collection day, but it’s limited to less than two cubic yards per day. It must be containerized in either sealed plastic bags or 32- to 50-gallon waste cans, and those containers cannot weigh more than fifty pounds. Any carpeting you wish to dispose of may also be left out on each collection day provided it has been cut into four-foot lengths and rolled into bundles weighing less than fifty pounds. This is the only kind of minor home-repair waste that can be placed on the ground and not containerized.
It’s important to note that SWA collectors are not required to take anything that doesn’t meet full bulk collection guidelines, so there’s a chance you can do all the hard work of lugging heavy items down to the curb only to find them still sitting there when the trucks have made their rounds.
The Environment and Oversized Trash Pickup
If you have bulky items to dispose of, it means there’s a good chance you’re in the middle of a larger task. Cleaning out the garage or reclaiming an unused bedroom is stressful enough, but it becomes even more overwhelming as projects get larger and environmental impact increases. When you’re managing an estate, trying to reset a damaged rental unit to get it back on the market, or in any other situation involving hard work and more waste than you can fit into bins, the last thing you need to do is worry about where your waste will end up when it’s all said and done.
We all want to do our part to protect the planet, but disposal is a tricky situation. You need bulk items out of your house, but you don’t want them heading straight for the landfill. This is especially true when you’re dealing with used items that have little to no resale value but plenty of useful life left. SWA does not take discarded furniture or other unwanted goods in usable condition to donation centers, and it’s not always easy to know how much of what’s set out for weekly collection is recycled.
Working to minimize your landfill impact can be as simple as choosing the right private oversized trash pickup service, though. At Jiffy Junk, our core focus is providing eco-friendlier solutions to waste management to residential and commercial clients throughout Palm Beach County.
How Choosing the Right Hauler Minimizes Your Footprint
Our trained and experienced Jiffy Junk technicians come to your home or place of business to remove unwanted items from where they sit, which means you never have to do the hard work of wrestling large, heavy items down to the curb. We’ll uninstall appliances, disassemble and remove furniture and collect waste, all before leaving your space broom-clean and cobweb-free.
Because we’re dedicated to minimizing our own environmental impact, we work hard to provide our customers with an indirect boost when it comes to eco-friendly behavior. We separate everything we remove, ensuring usable items make it to area charitable donation centers instead of the landfill. Together, Jiffy Junk and our customers work to support area communities while also keeping them clean.
Items which are damaged or broken beyond repair aren’t automatically tossed in the landfill, either. We work hard to find recycling solutions that go far beyond the minimum requirements set forth by state, local and federal law. We seek out recycling solutions wherever we can, working diligently to make sure as little as possible makes it to the landfill.
When you’re in the middle of a big project, you don’t need to waste time and energy trying to figure out what to do with your trash. We provide one-time pickup, offer waste management for ongoing jobs and extend our white-glove service promise to every customer we meet. Don’t waste time trying to haul heavy items to the curb or trying to wrestle everything onto a truck to dump it in the landfill yourself. Do your back, your community and the environment a favor, and call Jiffy Junk today.
