Bulky-item rules in Providence

Homes in buildings of six or fewer units can book free bulky pickup through Waste Management, but mattresses are excluded. Larger buildings and businesses are not eligible.

Mattresses at the curb must be clean and sealed in a clear mattress bag; Providence residents can also drop them off unbagged at DPW on Allens Avenue on Saturday mornings.

When a job is too big or too commercial for city service, we take it from there.

Providence electronics and mattress rules

Rhode Island's e-waste law funds free recycling of covered TVs, computers and monitors for households and schools. Business electronics are recycled separately.

Fridges, freezers and AC units need their refrigerant recovered under EPA Section 608 before scrapping, so we keep them separate.

Where the load ends up in Providence

Most of Rhode Island's trash goes to RIRRC's Central Landfill in Johnston, which does not accept mattresses for disposal. RIRRC's Residential Recycling Area on Shun Pike takes bulky and special items from residents.

Frequently asked questions

Can a Providence business use the city bulky pickup?

No. Only properties with six or fewer units on city trash service can book it. We handle offices, labs, stores and larger apartment buildings.

What happens to mattresses from a Providence cleanout?

The Central Landfill does not accept mattresses, so we keep them out of the trash load and send them to Rhode Island's mattress recycling program.
