North Carolina landfill bans and recycling programs

  • North Carolina bans white goods, TVs and computer equipment, whole tires, lead-acid batteries and other items from landfills (NC DEQ). Lithium-ion batteries are added to the ban starting December 1, 2026.
  • Every North Carolina county must provide at least one site that collects discarded white goods and removes their refrigerant, and no disposal fee may be charged (G.S. 130A-309.81).
  • Appliances that contain refrigerant need it recovered under EPA Section 608 before scrapping, so those units are handled separately from other junk.

Official rules: North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ), plus your city or county solid waste department.
